How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign technology and treatments consist of a series of aligners that will gradually align and straighten your teeth. Each aligner will roughly be worn for two weeks before you start wearing the next in the series (exact times will vary from patient to patient). Each aligner in the series will be slightly different from the last and will gently apply more pressure to the teeth that are being straightened. Though the aligners are removable, they will need to be worn day and night and only be removed for:

Brushing
Flossing
Eating
Drinking

Please note: By not consistently wearing your aligners, your teeth can start to move back to their original position, and treatment times can take considerably longer.

Can teenagers and adults have Invisalign?

Invisalign can be used to treat both teenagers and adult patients depending on the suitability of the individual. Invisalign is one of the more popular treatments with our adult & teenager patients as it allows them to discretely straighten their teeth, whilst easily fitting into their lifestyle.

The convenience, effectiveness, and easy-to-use nature of Invisalign have made it the straightening system of choice for millions of patients looking to improve their smiles worldwide. It’s the clear choice for patients looking for a cosmetic approach to their orthodontic treatment, eliminating the worry that they will feel self-conscious wearing traditional metal braces. Invisalign offers a very successful way to boost confidence and achieve a dream smile.

Invisalign After Care

After you have completed the Invisalign programme, we will *whiten and recontour your teeth (if required). *Please Note: You must be at least 18 years old and suitable for teeth whitening.

Tooth re-contouring will treat any minor chips or blemishes you might have had before having Invisalign, which will truly complete your new smile.

You will need to wear retainers to keep your teeth in their new positions following your Invisalign treatment. Teeth have a habit of moving out of place, so you will need to wear retainers on a part-time basis (usually overnight) for as long as you wish your teeth to stay straight. You will be given fixed or removable retainers.

How long does Invisalign straightening take?

This will be case-dependent, based on the severity of your needs. Typically, Invisalign can use between 18-36 aligners (both upper/lower arches), which takes around 9-18 months to complete the treatment.

During the treatment, you will need to visit your dentist every 4-6 weeks for a progress check-up, and you will also be given your next series of aligners. If you are looking for a quicker alternative to Invisalign (and you are suitable), we also offer 6-month smiles.

Will Invisalign affect my speech?

You may find it takes a few days to get used to the aligners and may have a slight lisp at first, but you should be talking clearly and confidently before long.

Are the aligners comfortable?

Yes, Invisalign aligners have been designed with comfort in mind, enabling you to easily wear them for up to 22 hours a day. They fit snugly over the teeth and have no metal brackets or wires to irritate the skin.

How long do I need to wear the aligners for each day?

You need to wear your aligners for around 22 hours a day in order for your treatment to be most effective. You can take them out for eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, and playing contact sports.

What are Invisalign aligners made of?

The Invisalign aligners are made from strong medical-grade thermoplastic material, which has been uniquely developed for the Invisalign system.

What should I do if I lose an aligner?

If you lose one of your aligners, please contact us as soon as possible for further advice. In the meantime, you can wear an aligner from your previous set to prevent your teeth from moving too far out of line. We may also advise that you move straight onto your next set of aligners, depending on your individual case.
